Dark Angel: A Gothic Fairy Tale by T.J. BennettDark Angel by TJ Bennett
When young widow Catherine Briton is washed ashore, the sole survivor of a violent shipwreck, all she wants is to go home to London. But injured as she is, she can’t escape when a shadowy stranger rescues her and takes her to his castle—where she’s healed with suspicious, almost magical speed.
The more time Catherine spends in the castle, the more her curiosity rises where her fiercely handsome new “master,” Gerard, is concerned. As she begins to investigate, though, her discoveries only bring more questions. It seems Gerard isn't the only one on the island keeping secrets…
The small town is full of strange mysteries and townspeople who know more than they should about her. And when a hulking beast that stalks the nearby hills and valleys catches up to her, Catherine must figure out what’s going on before it’s too late.
This was a definitely a different genre for me and it was an interesting read. It reminded me of a historical fairy tale. I thought it was well written.
Catherine wakes on a mysterious island after her boat is destroyed in a storm. The man who rescues her is called “Master” by the inhabitants of the island. He treats her injuries, which heal quite fast and well, but she is told people are not able to leave the island. She has a job to do, a house full of children who are depending on her.
In her quest to have her questions answered, she discovers other inhabitants of the island. She notices strange things happening, a reluctance of the people of the village to talk about “Master,” or Gerard as she refers to him. He shows a very strong possessiveness of Catherine. Discovering the secrets of the island and its inhabitants also leads to discovering the truth of Gerard.
The story reads well and is easy to follow. I was pleasantly surprised and would be interested in reading more by this author.
